Professor Ashraf Salama

Dr. Ashraf M. Salama is an academic, scholar, and professor of architecture. He is full professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Qatar University and holds the position of Dohaland Chair in Architecture jointly with Tim Makower of Allies and Morrison. Until recently, he has held a Reader in Architecture position at the School of Planning, Architecture, and Civil Engineering, Queens University Belfast, United Kingdom. He has held several tenured, permanent, visiting, and resident academic positions at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; University of Naples-Federico II, Naples, Italy; Misr International University, Cairo, Egypt; North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States; and Al Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Salama was the Director of Research and Consulting at Adams Group Consultants in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA (2001-04). He is a licensed architect in Egypt, trained at Al Azhar University and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. USA and holds Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D in Architecture. He was the Chairman of the Department of Architecture, Misr International University in Cairo (1996-01). Dr. Salama has been involved with the Community Development Group of the College of Design, North Carolina State University (1992-95), researching and teaching at the graduate level.

With varied experience in academic research, teaching, design and research based consultancy, Dr. Salama bridges theory and design and pedagogy and practice in his professional activities. He has written over 100 articles and papers in local and international conferences, archival journals, and trade magazines; authored and co-edited six books: New Trends in Architectural Education: Designing the Design Studio (North Carolina, USA), Human Factors in Environmental Design (Cairo, Egypt), Architectural Education Today (Lausanne, Switzerland), Architecture as Language of Peace (Napoli-Rome, Italy), Design Studio Pedagogy: Horizons for the Future (Gateshead, United Kingdom), and Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism (Solingen, Germany) He delivered lectures and presentations in over 25 countries; and contributed widely to several international publications. He was member of the UIA/UNESCO International Committee of Architectural Education, and the Director of Architectural Education Work Program of the International Union of Architects-UIA (1995-00).

Professor Salama is currently coordinator of the International Association for People-Environments Studies-IAPS Education Network, UK, and serves on the boards of reviewers of Time-based Architecture International and on the Scientific Committees of numerous international conferences. In 2006, he established the new online refereed academic Journal: International Journal of Architectural Research (Archnet-IJAR), sponsored by the Aga Khan trust for Culture, and with technical support of Archnet at MIT School of Architecture and Planning.
